Human Rights Photo Exhibit Captures Stories
of Young Undocumented Immigrants

The Salt Lake City Human Rights Commission
presents "DREAMers: Living in the Shadow of
Hope," an exhibit by photographer Lynn Hoffman-Brouse
and social worker Annie Brewer. The photo
exhibit brings awareness through portraits and
stories of the unique plight of nearly 30 young,
intelligent, hard-working students who came to
this country as children, were raised as
Americans, but have no legal status that allows
them to work, vote or apply for student aid. The
intent of the exhibit is to help eliminate the
negative stereotypes and misconceptions that are
associated with undocumented immigrants.For

On January 13, Salt Lake City’s Art Barn will
open an exhibit featuring artwork by Fahimeh
Amiri and Loné Vilnius will open with an evening
reception. Amiri is an Iranian-American artist
whose vivid paintings reflect her cultural
heritage. Vilnius works with mixed media and
found object to build three-dimensional
assemblages. Admission is free. |

The Guest Writers Series, a literary program
co-sponsored by the University of Utah English
Department and Creative Writing Program,
presents readings by nationally known writers.
On Thursday, January 19, poet and critic Wayne
Koestenbaum and prose writer Deb Olin Unferth
will read at the Art Barn. Next up, poet and
prose writer Jenny Boully will read on
Wednesday, February 15 and poets Jennifer
Perrine and Anne Winters will share their work
on Thursday, March 22. All readings are followed
by receptions with the writers. Admission is

YouthCity serves Salt Lake City's young people
ages 9-18 with innovative and enriching
activities created with input from participants.
The programs are located throughout Salt Lake
City, where young people can have fun while
learning new skills. YouthCity currently
provides teen, after-school and summer, arts,
employment, sports, government and service
learning programming.
After-school program pickup from Lincoln,
Whittier and Bennion elementary schools; Bryant
Middle School and the Salt Lake Arts Academy.
Evening teen programs run from 6 - 8 p.m. Monday
– Thursday at the Central City and Northwest
